It is 11:30 P.M. and the journalist
is home from Lexington and ready to put this Traveling
Journal to bed. It has been an adventure — one to be shared
with the entire NWHA family. But this episode in NWHA’s
journey is completed.
As we traveled home we hit some
significant rain with moments of blinding water and vehicle
swaying wind with horse trailer behind (oh, didn’t we
mention we brought another horse home? That’s another
story). I-64 in spots was bumpy with a pothole here and
there that seemed to jump out of nowhere and grab the
vehicle. But, we stayed on course and the trailer, with the
horse in it, stayed right with us. This team: us, vehicle,
and horse, made it home – in one piece — together.
Working together, staying the
course, we accomplished our mission: moving the NWHA
office to Lexington and having it operational by today! My
daddy would say: “There is a lesson here”, and there is!
If you have a mission (and NWHA
does—“It’s about the Horse”)
and you believe in the mission, then you stay the course.
Bumpy roads, a little rain, some strong winds, and a pothole
or two are but part of any journey. You don’t quit. You
don’t lose sight of the mission. You keep working (for
that horse) because: “There is a difference”
(check out
NWHA’s Capital Campaign) —
and Our Horse is worth it!
Thanks for taking this journey with
NWHA, Your Walking Horse Association
Stay tuned for the
next chapter: " NWHA in the Kentucky Horse Park ”
Oh, there is one
catch. YOU, the members, must write this chapter !!

NO ONE EVEN STOPPED FOR LUNCH!
Lisa, Gordan, Pam, Harriet, Duane-etc. moved
papers, hustled files, opened mail, and indoctrinated Patricia (NWHA’s
new Exec. Dir.) in the way of going of the National Walking Horse
Association. And when the sun set, everyone was tired, but knew
the direction was on target.
Monday -- for those of us at the NWHA office
– it was truly LABOR DAY! But us walking horse folks know that
good work requires good food , so, we did stop to enjoy rosemary
infused roasted Cornish hens, wild rice a la mushrooms, fresh
green beans sautéed with almond butter and graced with roasted
pimento, baby romaine kissed with strawberries and gently tossed
with poppyseed dressing, fresh baked multigrain bread served with
tarragon butter, and a finale of warm apple pie accompanied with
vanilla bean flecked ice cream.
Wish you were there

What is Black & Blue, and full of
Ribs?
NWHA Official Office Unpackers
Eight A.M.; Hotel Breakfast Room ---
Coffee in hand the Crew set out to the interim office site and
begin the job of the day; unloading the LONG as in HUGE U-haul
truck. Boxes begin coming off. Hands (as in all hands on deck)
begin sifting through and sorting into piles: office supplies,
show items, trophies, brochures, computer, other equipment,
furniture, DQP materials, files, well, you get the picture.
Mid-morning, another hand arises —
Lisa Hite is reporting for duty. She is appreciated and really
regaled when we hear she has left college friends, from out of
town, at home to come help. Off to the storage unit with “stuff”
and a drop off the Monster truck. Duane doesn’t even shed a tear
as he leaves that vehicle behind. PIZZA --- but no break.
Now the work begins --- where does
this go; call Connie or Val to see if they need any of “this” for
the National; make a list to ask the Board questions; have you got
those DQP reports for Dr. Reband: and the ALPHABET soup goes on (
that one is for you, Harriet --- from Clark ).
7:00 P.M. FOOD — Lisa heads home to
be a hostess, with assurances she will be back on Sunday. The rest
of us head out for food and a place to rest our weary but
exhilarated souls. Just as we start to sit down the cell phone
rings. Dr. Lawler and Pam are about 120 miles out. With plans to
meet for breakfast, we say goodnight to our new Executive
Director, Patricia, (This lady never sat down all day ---- and
then at dinner she learned about NWHA - our mission, our horse,
our people — wow - what an impression she has made on all of us
already). She has a warmblood and is into dressage, Sue Fanelli.
Oh, did we mention the ice cream??
11:00 P. M. Back in the room,
brought some work to do so we can hit the ground running in the
morning. It is the Labor Day weekend. Yet a dedicated bunch of
NWHA members are present and accounted for to move NWHA into its
new office—into its rightful place in the equestrian world.
There is a lot of work still to
be done. NWHA needs your help to advance our Walking Horse –
to date many have risen to assist with the move, both in time and
with money --- as NWHA kicks off the
Capital
Campaign
please contribute your share — for our horse!
Good night!

A
Presence in the “Horse Capitol of the World” By a
Walking Horse Association
NWHA is Officially Headquartered in Lexington,
Kentucky
The
truck is being unpacked as I type:
What a long two weeks
this has been! So much has been accomplished for NWHA
and so many good NWHA members have stepped up to the
plate to make it happen. If there was even a shadow of
a doubt about the strength of our organization to
survive the upheaval caused by the sudden unexpected
and unasked for resignations of both our president and
our director of operations, necessitating the
immediate relocation of the physical office, that
doubt has been put to rest by our strong membership.
It is apparent that our membership continues to be
united by our common belief that this organization is
first and foremost “about the horse”, not about any
one individual. Our mission has never wavered. We
continue to be committed to preserving and fostering
the natural abilities and welfare of the Walking
Horse.
Please take the time
to welcome Patricia Donohue as our new interim
Executive Director! We are delighted to have her on
our team. She is dedicated to providing excellent
member services; however, please be patient as she
gets to know our procedures and us. She will be
present at the National Championship Show so those of
you in attendance will have the opportunity to meet
her personally.
Now – how else do you
get to welcome her? By dialing our NEW PHONE NUMBER -
859-252-NWHA (6942)! A personalized
phone number – exciting!
Your NWHA Board of
Directors has worked untiringly, in a unified manner,
to make certain that the National Walking Horse
Association remains strong. Please let your board
representatives know that you appreciate their work.
We are making a dedicated effort to see that our
members are furnished with current and accurate
information by using our web site and our National
News as tools. Our approved board minutes have been
printed in our magazine for some time now and
currently we are also putting them on our web site to
make sure they are available to our members as early
as possible. Please refer to our web site or call a
director in your area to obtain the most current,
accurate information regarding NWHA. Please do NOT
rely on rumors or internet chats.
Now – on to the next
big event – the
6th Annual NWHA Championship Horse Show! Try
to be there, with a horse if possible, as a helper
and/or as a spectator – just BE THERE! This is going
to be the best show in our history and we want you to
be part of it. We owe a debt of gratitude to show
manager Connie Holbrook and co-manager Val Delana for
taking over the reins in mid-stream. I hope to see you
there!
The office will be
open for business September 5th.

NWHA has proven its
stamina is relentless and its mission is on target.
But, in order to claim the Walking Horse’s place in
the equestrian world, NWHA must be financially fit in
order to fund programs, assist new shows, and expand
our horse’s market. Yes, money! Opportunities like
NWHA has in front of us now don’t happen every day.
CAPITALIZE on these opportunities – for NWHA – For the
horse. How? Stay tuned.

Back On The Road Again
It's Friday, the day for the NWHA
caravan to leave from all points and converge on Lexington, Ky.
The Pennsylvania contingent is up and ready to roll with a horse
trailer hitched up. (Gonna bring a horse home and an antique pub
table but that’s another story)
Trouble in Alabama -- the big U-Haul
should be on the road but Harriet has colic! See, -- she and Judy
(Hand, that is) went to Murfreesboro to get vendors and sponsors
for the National. (And did they get some---they promised the
vendors and sponsors there would be lots of horses, -- no, let me
correct that, -- not just “horses” — WALKING Horses -- and lots of
people to buy their “stuff” --- oh, ya’ll better come and bring a
friend — BUT, that’s another story).
Well, Harriet is barely back in her
“stall” when she is gripped with pain and literally can’t get out
of bed for three days. But, a woman of her word, (and against
Duane’s better judgment), she climbs into the pace car and heads
to Lexington. Get them to tell you what waffle house serves
bratwurst at two in the morning in Nashville.

You Can Call Me Up Any Ol’
Time
Have you heard the one about the two
Walking Horses at the Watering Hole…?
|
“WHOA! Aren’t you the
sweetest sorrel I’ve ever seen…? You from this barn?”
“Neigh! I was out for a
WALK, and saw the watering hole.”
“A NATURAL WALK I’d wager,
based on that confirmation of yours…”
“You STUD you…”
“I’d like to call your barn…
What’s your number, Lil’ Filly??”
“My number is my name:
859-252-NWHA…”
“You can call me up… any ol’ time...
But a word of warning, Gaited Man,
I’ve got a whole association behind
that number!”

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES…
“Duane, what on earth are your
doing?” Harriet asked as she entered the grove of trees that
sheltered the NWHA U-Haul. Duane turned and smiled a little...
oops, you caught me smile, but a smile nonetheless. “Just checking
the office honey.”
As they walked away from the truck,
Duane turned and gave the truck a pat on the hood. “Only two more
days, Big Guy and then we hit the trail to Lexington… Blue Grass…
the Kentucky Horse Park… NWHA Open for Business!”
NWHA… Open For Business… From all
directions, volunteers will converge on the new office site and
begin the task of unpacking, sorting and “setting up” the office.
Get ready Patricia, you are about to meet the lifeblood of NWHA,
its dedicated members…
More to follow…

“There’s a Lot of Movin’ and Shakin”
Goin” On…"
The journey of the NWHA Office “stuff”
is only part of the move. Behind the excitement of the Road
Trip is the plain ol’ hard work of the BOD and Executive
Committee to keep the virtual doors of NWHA open to members.
The spin point for the coordination of the office move, the
National Show, “regular shows, members needs, and business
needs is Juana Grover’s kitchen table. Juana stepped up to
the plate when the office of the President was vacated and
has facilitated this move with courage, integrity and
forward thinking leadership. The words “can’t,” “NO,” and
“not now” do not exist in this Board’s vocabulary.
Gordon Lawler, NWHA co-founder and
Treasurer, has worked non-stop to make sure the financial
needs of the organization are met. His belief in the NWHA
and his leadership has been steady and true to the NWHA’s
mission.
Lisa Hite, Secretary, has gotten Board
actions, minutes and Flashes on to the Website quickly so
members know what is “happening.”
In one short week, the NWHA Board has:
1) Determined that the NWHA deserves to be in the Kentucky
Horse Park,
2) Found an interim office until we move into the KHP
permanently,
3) Searched for, found and hired an experienced and capable
interim Executive Director,
4) Hired part-time secretarial staff,
5) Consulted with other equine executives concerning
organizational management, industry relationships and
marketing,
6) Handled all the tasks so phone and internet links will be
ready when the “office” arrives,
7) Established a work schedule to unpack and set up the
office over Labor Day weekend so the office will be
functional on Tuesday, September 5, 2006.
8) Appointed Connie Holbrook and Val Delana as co-chairs of
the National Horse Show,
9) Appointed Pam Reband as interim Director of DQPs,
10) Appointed the Judges Committee, chaired by Roger Hand,
to assume interim responsibility for Director of Judges
11) Made a commitment to re-establish relationships with
former or non-active members,
12) Adopted a resolution for a Capital Campaign to ensure
financial solvency,
13) Vowed to continue NWHA’s mission for the Walking Horse
without missing a ‘beat’.
Stay tuned, there’s more to come..
The Journey Continues…
Connie Holbrook and Val Delana took the
reins of the National Show, did a flying lead change and
never missed a beat…
They have only been at this job one
week, but with their skills and many folks offering their
help, they report it will be a huge and successful show.
They’re getting out packets, filing important work
positions, and hear that lots of Walking Horses will be at
the Miller Coliseum September 20 through the 23, 2006.
It just gives an entirely new meaning
to the saying:
“WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE
TOUGH GET GOING”

HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU…
Nagadoches, Texas… 7:00 AM. The aroma of coffee woke
John from a deep sleep. Saturday… a trail ride… Friends,
food and a big 24 foot U-Haul truck. No lazy ride through
the pecan groves today.
Kathryn was at the door with
the Thermos©… John in the truck – Kathryn in the SUV… The
NWHA Office was back on the road…
7:00 AM. Montevallo, Alabama.
Harriet and Duane Lewis pulled out of their driveway on a
mission… to rendezvous with the NWHA Office in Jackson,
Mississippi…
A carefully crafted hand-off
by John and Kathryn to Harriet and Duane (almost a thousand
members and the moving crew are all named “Lewis”… (we told
you NWHA was just one big happy family). (Must be a back
story here somewhere)… The location so carefully planned???
Corky’s Barbeque…high noon – ribs, coleslaw, corn and plans
– plans for member services, more shows and acceptance of
the Walking Horse at shows other than Walking Horse only
events…
With full stomachs, the
Lewis’, (John and Kathryn), said goodbye to the Lewis’
(Duane and Harriet) and headed back to Texas for a real
trail ride on a smooth Walking Horse knowing NWHA was alive,
well, and working for the horse.
Duane climbed into the U-Haul
truck (with no shocks, but that’s another story) and Harriet
followed in her “pace” car back toward Birmingham. Duane
pulled the trotty (well, it didn’t ride like a Walking
Horse) U-Haul into the driveway of Cedar Hawke Farm about
5:30 PM and parked the “tired ole horse” in the shade of a
stand of trees. As he released the wheel, his white knuckles
slowly regained their color and he gave a sigh of
pleasurable relief. Harriet came in behind him, eased up
along side him, rolled down the window, looked at him with
one of her big warm smiles, and said in her Alabama drawl,
“It’s been a long day and Cedar Hawke is lookin’ good, big
guy!” Without another word, they walked into the house and
looked back, only once, to see that big ol’ U-Haul, with the
past and the future of the National Walking Horse
Association, nestled safely until the final leg of its
journey on Friday, September 1, 2006 to Lexington, Kentucky.
AUGUST 25, 2006
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
IT’S THE DAWNING OF A NEW DAY
The glow of the sun against
the horizon greeted John and Kathryn Lewis as they accepted
the call to start NWHA on its move to Kentucky. Guess
you could call them the “impulsion” for this forward
movement…
Coffee, jeans, and energy… And the packing began…
NWHA’s office was battened down inside the truck… Kathryn
carefully placed the computers in her SUV and off they went…
East on 82 to 69 and into
Nagadoches for a much needed break before hitting the trail
on Saturday morning on the next leg of NWHA’s Journey…
FOR THE HORSE!!!!
It’s just Natural, NWHA’s
move to the Horse Capital of the World. The gates are open

horse.

other equine organizations and associations. The Walking
Horse, our breed, is on the move!
The Kentucky Horse Park is a
