Reining
Championships Class Correction-------
At the 2008
NWHA National Championship Horse Show, there was a tie for
the Reining Championship. The tie was broken by the
standard procedure that was in place at the time. The tie
procedure awarded Melissa Davidson and Roger Packard as
co-Reining Champions for this class. We would like to
correct the error in the announcement of the 2008 NWHA
National Reining Championship; NWHA would like to extend
congratulations to Melissa and Roger.

Dear NWHA Members,
As you likely know, the Executive Board has been
considering candidates to assume the position of Executive
Director. After thoughtful consideration, it is with great
pleasure that I announce the appointment of Vanessa D.
Crowe as our new executive director.
With more than 35 years of marketing and equine industry
experience, Vanessa brings extensive knowledge and skills
that will contribute to NWHA’s growth. I am confident that
her fresh approach will further establish NWHA as the
leading organization dedicated to naturally gaited Walking
Horses.
In her most recent position as executive director of
United Mountain Horse, Inc., she oversaw a significant
increase in membership. During that seven-year-tenure,
Vanessa managed shows, judging and DQP programs and
developed and integrated programs, publications, national
and regional promotions and educational venues for the
organization.
An accomplished equestrian, Vanessa has spent her life
around Walking Horses and shares NWHA’s values. She
currently resides in Stanton Kentucky with her husband of
30 years, with whom she has two children.
Vanessa is looking forward to assuming her
responsibilities on January 2, 2009 and has already begun
a smooth transition process with Don Vizi and members of
the Board.
Please join us in welcoming Vanessa to NWHA!
Warm Regards,
Lori Snyder-Lowe

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL NWHA SUPPORTERS! |
 |
|
I would
like to ask you to do something different this holiday
season. I ask that you view the holidays through the
eyes of a child. Yes, a child. Think about this - the
calm, yet exciting snowfall (remember - the eyes of a
child!), the pending arrival of the big guy in red,
the approaching "down time" from school, and of
course, the best part of all - the opportunity to
spend some quality time with our families. I truly
hope you can find the time to see the holiday season
through the eyes of a child and enjoy some down time
from the stress and rigor of your everyday life. Best
wishes for a safe and joyous holiday season!

REGIONAL WINNERS GET CLASSES AT NWHA NATIONAL
In 2008, the
Horse Show Development Committee had a laundry list of
goals and tasks to tackle. One of these was a request by
the Board of Directors to develop a way to tie Regional
Shows in to the National for 2009 and beyond.
After much
brainstorming and refining, the HSD came back to the BOD
with the suggestion to add Regional Championship classes
at the National. These classes will be open to horses that
placed first through third in any 2 gait or 3 gait
Championship Class at any Regional Show in 2009. The
offerings for 2009 will be 4 classes, one 2 gait class for
each division to include Country Pleasure, Trail Pleasure,
Lite Shod and Plantation Pleasure. The winner of each of
these classes will hold the title of Regional Grand
Champion.
The Board of
Directors approved this plan. The plan and the other
suggestions from the Horse Show Development Committee were
sent to the National Horse Show Committee for scheduling.
Other ideas that were submitted included a Parade of
Regional Champions and special designations on stalls for
Regional Champions.
The Horse
Show Development Committee and the Board of Directors
would like to encourage all NWHA members to compete at one
or all of the eight Regional shows for 2009.

NWHA
Adds High Point Archives to Website!
Thanks to
the collaboration of Debbie Nuding, Paula Sue Swope and
Rick
Chovan, NWHA has been able to add some of the "history" of
our high point
awards to our website. High Point Award winners in the
first three places
since 1999 have been added to the NWHA Website in a "High
Point Archives"
page. Members will find interesting data about the
historical perspective
of our organization and its horses.
"We want to thank Debbie, Paula, and Rick for their time
and effort in
putting these archives together. We also want to thank Tom
Gossard for
his work to secure the high point award information for
the two missing
years for us. Without these hard working, dedicated
members, these
archives would not have been possible," stated NWHA
President Lori
Snyder-Lowe.

BEHIND THE
SCENCES AT THE 2008 NATIONAL SHOW
by Martha M. Day, Ed.D., Director of Designated Qualified
Persons
There is
a great deal of work that goes in to putting on a
successful National Show. The 2008 National was the best
show that NWHA has had to date. The Designated Qualified
Persons are indeed some of the hardest working individuals
at every NWHA show. They are the persons that ensure that
NWHA's shows are clean and sound and that every exhibitor
enters the show ring on a level playing field.
DQP
Ramona Rawson traveled from Texas with her daughter
Heather who volunteered her time to scribe for the entire
show. The Rawson family ranch was largely underwater due
to recent hurricane activity and it took enormous effort
and personal sacrifice for the Rawsons to make the journey
to Tennessee. DQP Steve Bill traveled from New York to
work at his fourth National show and DQP Marsha Hills
traveled from Minnesota. Each one of these dedicated
individuals took vacation time from their jobs to inspect
horses for NWHA. Their professionalism and skill is
unparalleled in the gaited horse show industry. Please
take the time to thank our DQPs for the wonderful job they
do for us. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

NATIONAL WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION
NAMES CHAMPIONS AT 2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Competition Underscores Versatility and Soundness of
Naturally Gaited Tennessee Walking Horses
Lexington, Ky.
(October 7, 2008) – For five days last week during the
National Walking Horse Association (NWHA)’s 2008 National
Championship Horse Show in Murfreesboro, Tenn., 339 sound
naturally gaited Tennessee Walking Horses—more than at any
previous NWHA National Show—showcased the versatility,
athleticism and natural gaits that distinguish the breed,
earning their way into the final day’s championship
rounds. More than 1,600 entries competed in 153 classes
ranging from Rail, Driving and Dressage, to Western
Riding, Water Glass and Trail Obstacle seeking the title
of National Champions.
“Every year seems to be better than the one before and
this Show did not disappoint,” said Don Vizi, executive
director, NWHA. “We were very pleased by the caliber of
the horses and riders, and we are proud to say that our
anti-soring policy was strictly enforced throughout the
duration of the show
To demonstrate its commitment to preserving and fostering
the natural abilities and welfare of the Walking Horse,
NWHA extended invitations to executive members of ASPCA,
the United States Humane Society and the USDA. Keith Dane
of the United States Humane Society and the Tennessee
State Director of the United States Humane Society
accepted and were in attendance at the show.
"The Humane Society of the United States appreciated
NWHA's invitation for HSUS representatives to observe the
Horse Protection inspection process at its National show,
without access limitations or restrictions.” said Dane.
“The offer represented a refreshing example of
transparency from one segment of the Tennessee Walking
horse industry.”
Focus on Youth
NWHA strives to foster a family-friendly atmosphere at its
shows and encourages participation by youth exhibitors.
This year’s National Show hosted 202 entries in the 17 and
under division, and in honor of NWHA’s 10th anniversary,
members of the Girl Scout equestrian program and the Girl
Scouts of Middle Tennessee were invited to participate
in the festivities. More than 45 scouts and their families
participated in a behind the scenes tour, helped award
ribbons and received a sneak peek at all the stalls during
the stall decorating competition. Other special guests
included the students of the award-winning Oakland High
School choir who performed during the opening ceremony.
The NWHA 2008 National Championship Show marked the
conclusion of the 2008 competitive show season. The 2009
season will begin in March, 2009.

NWHA Provides Level Playing Field for Members
The 2008 NWHA National Championship Horse Show will
provide members with a level playing field by providing a
comprehensive DQP inspection program
NWHA's Zero Tolerance Policy
The National Walking Horse Association has a zero
tolerance policy with respect to soring practices. The
practical application of this policy is to treat callus
formation and/or significant hair loss in the pastern area
of both front limbs as evidence of soring on horses born
on or after January 1, 1998. Those horses born prior to
January 1, 1998 will be subject to the scar rule
provisions as written in the Horse Protection act of 1970.
Any horse exhibiting signs of unilateral or bilateral
soreness on the front or hind limbs shall be ticketed by
the Designated Qualified Person(s) in accordance with the
Horse Protection Act of 1970.
-
Horses’ shoes
will be inspected for compliance with NWHA’s rules.
Shoes may be pulled and weighed to ascertain that shoes
are formed only from conventional steel.
-
Horses will
be observed for temporary visual impairment and may be
required to submit a blood sample for drug testing.
NWHA was
established to protect the Walking Horse from abuse and we
will continue to do this by having sound flat shod Walking
Horse Shows by enforcing the Horse Protection Act.

Lexington
Herald Leader
Letters to the Editor
100 Midland Avenue
Lexington, KY 40508
SUBJECT: Letter to the Editor re:
your story “Banned
But Not Banished.”
Dear Editor:
On behalf of the nearly 900 members of the National
Walking Horse Association (NWHA), I want to applaud you
for your story “Banned But Not Banished” (08/31/08).
While the soring of walking horses has come under
increased scrutiny by federal regulators, it is stories
like the one you described that show the industry has a
long way to go toward 100% compliance of the 1970 Federal
Horse Protection Act. The fact is we are almost 40 years
since the passage of the HPA, and the soring of walking
horses continues.
NWHA, a decade-old organization committed to preserving
and fostering the natural abilities and welfare of the
Walking Horse, has been vocal and active in the fight
against soring. With a zero tolerance policy as our
bedrock, we have invited both The Humane Society and the
USDA to attend our upcoming 2008 National Championship
Horse Show (Murfreesboro, TN Sept. 30-Oct. 4).
On behalf of our membership and all admirers of the
versatile and majestic Walking Horse, I hope that the
Lexington Herald Leader and other media continue to shine
a spotlight on soring – calling attention to violators of
the HPA, so that someday a zero tolerance policy becomes
the norm.
Sincerely,
Donald A. Vizi

National Walking Horse Association Responds to AAEP’s
White Paper Assessment of Tennessee Walking Horse Sore
Horse Issues
The National
Walking Horse Association wishes to commend
the American Association of Equine Practitioners’
White Paper assessment of the mainstream Tennessee Walking
Horse Industry HIO’s. It is well known that the
establishment of NWHA in 1998, by previous industry
insiders, was due to the continued practice, as stated by
the AAEP, of “not eliminating recognized abuses that are
at the core of the problem”. “Putting the horse first” is
not a new term to NWHA but remains the number one priority
of this organization. “Scarring, calluses or other skin
conditions indicative of treatments directed at increasing
sensitivity of horses currently in competition” is not
tolerated at an NWHA event. It is on this premise that
NWHA operates and through its DQP program will continue to
remain in full compliance with the Horse Protection Act,
as it has since its 1998 inception.

White Paper.

It is with
deep sadness that I inform you of the untimely death of
Cristy Anderson, 25 year old daughter of Dr. Ed and Teena
Anderson, Simpsonville, SC. Christy and her horse, U
Gotta See This, were well known in the NWHA show
arena. In one of their recent shows, the NWHA Regional
Championship Show held in Asheville, NC, in June of this
year, Christy and her horse were the 1st runner-up in the
King and Queen Contest. They also exhibited in the
Firecracker Jubilee held July 3-5th.
What most of
us did not know is that Christy had a battle with Leukemia
at an early age and has struggled with effects of the
disease most of her life. Even though for the last eight
years she had suffered with a heart condition brought on
by the effects of the disease, Christy had become a
regular participant on the NWHA show circuit in the
East/South East and at the National. Her winning smile,
good sportsmanship, and friendly demeanor were well known
by everyone who knew her.
Viewing will be held Tuesday evening, July 29, 6:00 - 8:00
PM, at Mackey Mortuary in Greenville, SC. The funeral
service will be Wednesday, July 30, 2:00 PM, at Southside
Fellowship in Greenville.
The family
has suggested that in lieu of flowers anyone wishing to do
so may make a memorial donation in Christy's name to
either of her two favorite charities:

NATIONAL WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS
2010 WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES
Organization Encourages WEG Selection Committee to
Showcase
Naturally Gaited Walking Horse in Breed Demonstrations
Lexington, Ky. (July 23, 2008) – The National Walking
Horse Association (NWHA) announces its support of the 2010
Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) and is seeking
the opportunity to showcase a naturally gaited Walking
Horse as part of the Games’ breed demonstrations. To date,
Tennessee Walking Horses have not been included in the
demonstration.
NWHA’s support also comes with an agreement to include the
WEG logo on select merchandise and in printed material,
including the NWHA National News magazine. In addition,
Allen All Around, 15-time NWHA National Champion,
demonstrates his support of the Games by displaying the
WEG logos on his saddle pad.

NWHA’s
support of the Games marks the organization’s determined
commitment to showcase the versatility, authenticity and
natural gaits of the sound Tennessee Walking Horse in
high-profile events. The 2010 Games represents an
opportunity to introduce the beauty and athleticism of the
Walking Horse on a worldwide stage and to thousands of
equestrian fans who may not yet be affiliated with a breed
of choice.
“We believe the 2010 Games represent the right time, the
right place and the right platform to spotlight the
naturally gaited Walking Horse, turning the attention of
the anticipated 600,000 spectators to the unique qualities
of the breed,” says Don Vizi, executive director of the
National Walking Horse Association. “For the first time,
the 16-day series of events is being held outside Europe
and all events will take place at one location – the
Kentucky Horse Park, which is also our home. We will
remain active and vigilant during the selection process
for the breed demonstration and will continue to support
the Games throughout NWHA events and our communications to
members.”
Page 2 – National Walking Horse Association Supports
The 2010 World Equestrian Games will take place at the
Kentucky Horse Park, Sept. 25 – Oct. 10, and serve as the
world championships of the eight equestrian disciplines
recognized by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI).
These include jumping, dressage, eventing, driving,
reining, vaulting, endurance, and for the first time, para-equestrian.
The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games expects more than
900 competing horses during the 16-day event and
anticipates more than 600,000 spectators.

Rules
Committee requested permission from the NWHA Board of
Directors to research the recommendation to consider
Country Pleasure a keg-shoe (stamped drop-forged shoe)
only division. Currently Country Pleasure (Section
10.17), shoe requirements are at the discretion of show
management. The basis for the rule change would be to
promote a more uniform criteria and “level playing
field”. Ultimately the goal would be to promote class
participation in this division.

Important
Correction
I want to clarify a
statement that was in the June issue of the NWHA National
News, in our “Board Teleconference Highlights”, March 12,
2008. The statement “Gary Lane, may have some incorrect
information on his website regarding NWHA”… This
discussion item should not have appeared in the National
News. Gary Lane is an active member of NWHA and in 2001 he
received a certificate, “Award of Honor” for
special contributions to the cause of the humane treatment
of horses, which was part of our Phoenix Award Program.
We regret that Gary has been questioned on this subject
and we want to let everyone know that Gary is a highly
regarded member of our organization and supports the
mission of NWHA.
Again, we regret any discomfort this may have caused Gary
and apologize to him and his family for this unfortunate
incident.

PHBA RECOGNIZES NWHA
The Palomino Horse Breeders
Association officially recognized the National Walking
Horse Association at PHBA's national convention in
Lexington, Kentucky, in March. NWHA, an organization
dedicated to the natural Walking Horse, has its
headquarters in Lexington.
The PHBA convention voted to
make Palominos contained in the NWHA Tracking Registry eligible
for the PHBA registry. Also, NWHA was specifically
nominally added to the list of equine associations whose
horses are eligible for recognition in the PHBA Palomino
Performance Program. This program awards PHBA points and
prizes to PHBA registered Palominos that compete in
non-PHBA shows. Interested Palomino Walking Horse owners
and exhibitors are encouraged to go to the PHBA website at
www.palominohba.com
Tennessean Richard Dunavant,
a member of both PHBA and NWHA and a supporter of the PHBA
measures, hopes to increase PHBA and NWHA membership and
registrations and to promote Palomino Walking Horses in
general. Dunavant also aspires to see Palomino classes in
NWHA-affiliated shows. Dunavant stated, " I am pleased
with the actions taken by PHBA in reaching out to the
National Walking Horse Association. Palomino Walking
Horses are not only beautiful but are among the best bred
naturally gaited horses. I hope more owners of these prize
horses will join and participate in PHBA."
The PHBA Golden Trails
Riding Program is also open to breed-registered Palomino
horses.
