The unique
National Walking Horse Association Tracking Registry (NWHATR)
provides a horse owner with documentation of both lineage and
performance achievements. The National Walking Horse
Association is now accepting walking horses for registration
into the National Walking Horse Association Tracking Registry
(NWHATR).
There are two
means by which a walking horse may be registered with the
National Walking Horse Association Tracking Registry (NWHATR):
-
Owners who can
furnish lineage information, both sire and dam, for their
horse may summit an application for registration into the
National Walking Horse Association Tracking Registry (NWHATR);
or
-
The horse may
become registered by the Gait and Conformation process.

Gait and
Conformation:
To be certified in the gait
registry, the horse is required to demonstrate three speeds: a
dog/trail or pasture walk, a proper four footed flat walk and
a running walk which demonstrates a noticeable increase in
speed.
Dog/Trail (pasture) walk: the
dog/trail walk should be a slow evenly timed walk with a
1-2-3-4 beat gait, such as a horse does naturally in the
pasture or walking slowly on the trail.
A. Flat
Walk: The flat walk should be bold
and four-cornered with an evenly timed 1-2-3-4 beat. In the
flat walk the horse should break at the knees, reaching and
pulling with the front legs with that movement originating
from the shoulder. The horse should have impulsion and exhibit
stride and drive with the hind legs. There should be no
wringing or twisting of the hocks, nor any excessive hock
action. The horse should demonstrate a loose way of going with
plenty of motion. A horse with a good flat walk will naturally
have an up and down head motion timed with the overall rhythm
of the walk. The flat walk is more bold or purposeful in
movement than the running walk.
B. Running
Walk: The running walk has the same
beat or footfall (1-2-3-4) as the flat walk but is with
greater stride, rhythm and natural motion. It should be
straight and loose, 4-cornered and exhibit over-all balance,
without any trace or degree of a rack, trot, fox trot, pace or
stepping pace. The horse should reach and pull in the front
with powerful shoulder movement and demonstrate obvious
impulsion behind, pushing and striding, setting its feet
firmly on the ground. The up and down head motion should be
timed with the overall rhythm of the running walk.
To apply for the gait and
conformation appendix registry, check the second box on page
one of the application, indicating that the horse is applying
to be registered by gait and conformation. You are not
required to furnish lineage information. Complete the
remaining form where applicable. The application form must be
accompanied by three (3) identical DVD's or video tapes that
conform to the criteria listed below. Horses will be viewed on
DVD or video tape by three inspectors, and all three
inspectors must approve the horse being evaluated for
registration.
Gait and Conformation Criteria:
Note: All activities in this section must be carried out
while the veterinarian, or certification committee member, is
present.
A veterinarian or any member
of the certification committee must check for conformation
abnormalities. Parrot mouth and retention of testicles in the
abdominal cavity (in stallions) will automatically disqualify
a breeding animal. The horse may be bare footed or shod on all
four feet with shoes no heavier than the regular lite shod
shoe (3/8 x 3/4). The horse cannot be shod on front or rear
only. Shoeing must be verified by the Veterinarian.
The veterinarian or
certification committee member must remain on site while the
DVD/video is made and the DVD/video must include:
- The horse being saddled
for riding. After the DVD/video is started it cannot be
stopped.
- The horse must be ridden
for the DVD/video in a manner that shows all angles of the
horse being ridden in both directions of a circle either
in an arena or outside. Remember the horse will be
evaluated from the DVD/video.
- Show both sides, front,
and rear of the horse for conformation evaluation.
Registration
Horses applying for appendix registration must be DNA tested.
DNA test kits are provided through NWHA. Provide the
application and 3 copies of the DVD or video along with
registration fee AND certification fee to the NWHA office.
